MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. ENGINE WILL NOT START
Step 1. Check for blocked or broken fuel lines.
Remove, clean or replace fuel lines (Para. 4-29).
Step 2. Check for clogged fuel filter.
Replace the fuel filter with new filter (Para. 4-28).
Step 3. Check for incorrect valve clearance as indicated by poor compression.
Adjust valve clearance (Para. 4-34).
Step 4. Check for starting load which is too high, due to clutch not disengaging.
Repair, replace clutch assembly (Para. 4-26).
ENGINE STARTS BUT FIRES INTERMITTENLY OR STALLS
Step. 1 Check for blocked or broken fuel lines.
Remove, clean or replace fuel lines (Para. 4-29).
Step 2. Check for clogged filter.
Replace the fuel filter with new filter (Para. 4-28).
Step 3. Check for incorrect valve clearance as indicated by poor compression.
Adjust valve clearance (Para. 4-34).
3. ENGINE LACKS POWER AND/ OR SMOKES BLACK
NOTE
Operation high altitudes or in cold ambient temperatures may
cause this malfunction.
Step 1. Check for clogged fuel filter.
Replace the fuel filter with new filter (Para. 4-28).
Step 2. Check for incorrect valve clearance as indicated by poor compression.
Adjust valve clearance (Para. 4-34).
Step 3. Check for clogged oil filter.
Replace the oil filter (Para. 4-14)
ENGINE RUNS BUT DOES NOT VIBRATE
Step 1. Check for broken or loose v-belt.
Adjust tension or replace v-belt (Para. 4-25).
