4-34. VALVES MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Compactor set on level ground in protected area.
Tool Kit, General Mechanics
Engine off and cool.
Wrench Kit: item 48, Appx F
V-belt cover removed.
Valve cover removed.
Adjustment of the valves IS accomplished on a

cold engine, if engine has been running recently,
allow engine to cool
Ensure that the decompression device IS not acti-

vated. knob turned to the far left (pin to left).
With the hand crank, slowly crank the engine to

bring the piston to top dead center (TDC), as indi-
cated by aligning the timing mark on flywheel with
TDC mark at 3 o`clock position of crankcase and
both valves are closed..

Loosen the locknuts on the adjusting screws and
insert a 0.004 in. (01 mm) feeler gauge, from
wrench kit, between the valve stem and pad on
rocker arm.

With screwdriver, adjust the adjusting screws at
each valve until a slight drag is felt on the feeler
gauge.
While holding the adjusting screw with screw-

driver, tighten locknut to secure the adjust-
ment.
7.
Recheck clearence with the feeler gauge, and re-
peat steps 4 through 6. if necessary
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include Install valve cover
(Para 4-33), Install v-belt cover (Para. 4-
24).
