5-13. CONNECTING ROD ASSEMBLY MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
3.
Apply a coat of engine lubricating oil to the bear-
ing halves (8) and Install the connecting rod (7)
through the top of the engine housing and seat
on crankshaft journal. Install the connecting rod
cap (6) through the access hole in bottom of en-
gine housing and seat on the crankshaft journal.

Secure connecting rod (7) and cap (6) with two
connecting rod screws (5) and nuts (4). Ensure
that screws are seated in connecting rod (7) and
tighten nuts (4) to 20-23 ft-lbs (27 31 Nm) with
torque wrench fitted with a 13 mm socket

Check radial end play of the connecting rod on
the crankshaft journal as follows'
a
Mount a dial indicator with stylus on the cen-
ter bottom of the connecting rod cap (6).
b. Grasp the connecting rod (7) at the top and
pull up firmly, while dial is zeroed.
c. Push down firmly on the connecting rod (7)
and read dial. The maximum allowable radial
bearing play is 0.0043 in. (0.110 mm). If ra-
dial bearing play exceeds maximum, notify
general support maintenance for repair of the
crankshaft.
6.
Install new gasket (3) and cover (2). Secure
cover with six flat head machine screws (1).
Tighten screws securely.

Set the engine upright.
8.
Slowly crank the engine to bring the connecting
rod to top dead center (TDC).
