Replace damagedbushing.(9)Check solenoid assembly (3) for cut or tornboot. If boot is damaged, replace solenoidassembly.(10)Inspect ball bearings (14), (15), and (42),as follows:(a)Hold armature (13) and slowly rotateouter bearing race by hand. Holdouter edge of ball bearing (42) andslowly rotate drive shaft (37) by hand.(b)Check that bearings turn freelywithout binding or the feel of flatspots.(c)Replace damaged bearings.(11)Inspect armature assembly (13) for gearteeth that are broken, or that show evidenceof step wear or root interference.(12)Inspect armature assembly (13) for roughcommutator surface. Polish with No. 400grit polishing cloth if necessary.Thoroughly clean metal dust from betweencommutator bars. If commutator surfacecannot be repaired in this manner, replacearmature assembly. Do not turncommutator in a lathe.(13)Inspect armature assembly (13) for worncommutator. Replace armature assembly ifcommutator OD is less than 35 mm (1.378in.) or if undercut depth at any point is lessthan 0.2 mm (0.008 in.). Do not undercutinsulation.(14)Inspect drive shaft (37) for scored ordamaged shaft where it turns in drive endhousing bushing. Replace drive shaft ifdamaged.(15)Inspect drive shaft (37) for internal gearwith teeth broken or showing evidence ofstep wear. Replace drive shaft if damaged.(16)Inspect drive shaft (37) for damaged spline.Clutch drive assembly must slide smoothlyand easily over full length of spline.Replace drive shaft if damaged.
