5-5. FUEL PUMP MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
8.
If measurement is not within the correct range, re-
move the fuel pump and adjust the fuel pump
mounting shims. Increasing shims will shorten
the difference of TDC marks (delaying the injec-
tion), reducing shims will increase the difference
of TDC marks (advances injection).
NOTE
The thickness of shims installed under the
fuel pump is stamped on the mounting
flange of the fuel pump in 1/10mm units.
When gear housing is replaced, or the in-
jection timing changed, the new corrected
thickness should be stamped on flange.
9.
If shims have been adjusted or a new fuel pump
Installed, the installation depth of the fuel pump
must be checked as follows:
a.
Remove the fuel pump, if not already re-
moved.
b. With depth gauge, measure distance from
mounting flange for fuel pump and the inter-
nal shoulder of the installed roller tappet. This
measurement plus the thickness of the shims
in use must be between 2.263 in. (57.5 mm)
and 2.327 in. (59.1 mm).
NOTE
If attempts to adjust shims for injection tim-
ing, while maintaining the installed depth
within range, check the timing alignment of
the camshaft gear or the TDC marks on fly-
wheel are wrong.
10. If the amount of shims installed has changed
from previously installed amount, use hand
grinder to remove old stamped value on mount-
ing flange and stamp new value with numeral im-
pact stamps.
11. Remove drip tube and reinstall the gasket (2) and
allen head screw (1) removed in step 4.
