l Wheels chocked.
l Brakeshoes removed (para 4-31).
l Slack adjuster removed (para 4-34).
l Wire brush (Item 3, Appendix E)
l Dry cleaning solvent (Item 12, Appendix E)
l One preformed packing
Tools/Test Equipment:
l One retaining ring
l General mechanics tool kit
l One seal
l Retaining ring pliers

REMOVAL
1.
Remove washer (1) from camshaft (18).
2.
Remove retaining ring (9) and washer (10) from camshaft (18). Slide camshaft out of spider (12). Discard
retaining ring.
3.
Remove seal (13), preformed packing (15), and washer (16) from camshaft (18). Discard seal and preformed
packing.
4.
Drive bushing (14) out of spider (12). Remove lubrication fitting (11) form spider.
5.
Remove four nuts (8), flatwashers (3 and 7), screws (2), and retainer assembly (4) from bracket (6). Remove
lubrication fitting (5) from retainer assembly.
b. CLEANING AND INSPECTION
WARNING
Dry cleaning solvent, P-D-680, is toxic and flammable. Always wear protective goggles
and gloves, and use only In a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and
clothes, and DO NOT breathe vapors. DO NOT use near open flame or excessive heat.
The solvents flash point Is 100°F-138°F (38°C-59°C). If you become dizzy while
using cleaning solvent, immediately get fresh air and medical help. If solvent contacts
eyes, immediately wash your eyes and get medical aid.
1.
Clean parts with dry cleaning solvent. Use wire brush to remove caked on dirt and corrosion. Replace parts if
defective.
2.
Inspect camshaft and S-cam (17) for wear. Replace if worn.
3.
Inspect camshaft and bushing in spider and retainer assembly (4) for looseness and binding. Replace camshaft
or bushing if defective.
4.
Inspect two grease fittings for damage. Replace if damaged.
